Report: Asian American Applicants Face Tougher College Admissions Odds Than Their White Peers

Inside Higher Ed(8/8, Knox) reports Asian American students “are much less likely than white applicants to be accepted to highly selective colleges and universities, according to a new working paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research.” The study “found that Asian American applicants to highly selective institutions were 28 percent less likely to be admitted than were white students with similar grades, test scores and extracurricular activities.” Josh Grossman, a Stanford data scientist and one of the study’s authors, said their findings were “largely unrelated” to the Supreme Court’s affirmative action case, “which he said was less concerned with Asian Americans’ disadvantages vis-à-vis white students than with the perceived advantages of Black and Latino applicants.” Still, Grossman “said the data are an important addition to scholarly understanding of recent trends around race and ethnicity in admissions.”

Higher Ed Dive(8/8, Spitalniak) reports the paper found that the gap “was worse for students of South Asian descent, who were 49% less likely to gain admission than their White peers with comparable applications. East Asian and Southeast Asian applicants’ odds were 17% lower than their White peers.” Much of the disparity “stemmed from legacy admissions policies that favor the children of alumni, who were more likely to be White, the paper said.”
